PILATES? What's That?

AEC Family Fitness Center PilatesActually it's a who. The quirky moniker (pronounced puh-LAH-teez) is the name of its inventor, Joseph Pilates, 1880-1968, a German-born circus performer and gymnast whose childhood illnesses (asthma, rickets, and rheumatic fever) sparked a quest to overcome his physical limitations.

He brought his revolutionary method of physical and mental conditioning to the United States in the early twenties.  His studio in New York City caught the attention of the dance community.  Pilates felt that his work was probably about fifty years ahead of its time, and although his name is not a yet a household work, people from all walks of life are discovering and choosing the Pilates technique as their fitness program.  Hospitals and physical therapy centers worldwide are using Pilates to rehabilitate injured athletes and dancers.  Many athletes from golfers to football players now incorporate Pilats into their training.

If you haven't heard of Pilates yet, you will soon.  In the sixties and seventies, Pilates was the well-kept secret of elite ballet dancers and the occasional well-to-do client. Now it is available for you at St. Joseph's premier fitness center AEC Family Fitness (Alice's Energy Connection)The longevity of the Pilates Method has given it a track record of consistent, proven results.

Pilates is a conditioning program that improves muscle control, flexibility, coordination, strength, and tone.  Each exercise is designed to stretch and strengthen the muscles involved, opening the joints and releasing tension.

Pilates bonds body and minds through two principal components: posture and breathing. By centering on the abdomen, Pilates strengthens the muscles in the back, hips, and stomach to support the spine.  The method works the deepest layer of abdominal muscles. It lifts the belly and backend while it tones and strengthens all the other muscles.
